I have not posted much lately because I have been playing a lot of popular games form the past such as Zelda on SNES and Ninja Gaiden series on NES. But I did recently start playing this.
Platypus is a strange shooter on PSP. There is a not a whole lot to set it apart from other shooters except for its very interesting style. It looks like faux claymation. Sort of like the old Clayfighters games. So far it is fun, but not as great as a Gradius or LifeForce.
And speaking of Life Force, I finally got the Life Force collection for PSP. It is an import game and it took me a couple of seconds to figure out how to insert a virtual coin for the earlier games, but once I did it was just like the grand old days of NES all over again, but now with 100% more Japanese.
I got this for christmas and I have been playing it most of the day. It is wonderful. Captures the spirit of the original which was one of my favorite games on NES.
My first iPod touch purchase. Vanguard Storm reminds me of the puzzle rpg that I spoke of earlier “Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes”.
There is a free lite version available of the first 3 levels.
That list made me remember how much I was in love with Retro Game Challenge at the beginning of the year.
You get to play several NES style games, and to make it more interesting you are challenged by a mischievous floating head to complete different tasks in the games like get to the 3rd level without using a power up or complete a race in x amount of time etc. There is a strange puzzle game, a galaga clone, a classic rpg, a rally racer, a top down shooter like Xevious but in outer space and the sequels to some of those games. After you have completed the challenge set, you may play any of these games in free play.
You are given game magazines with cheat codes and strategies as well as nicely illustrated game manuals for each game. You can access these on screen at any time after they are unlocked.
If you grew up playing NES in its initial release and you read Nintendo Power every month, this is an attempt at replicating that experience and for me the nostalgia and fun factors were equally high.
This list and part 1 were somewhat refreshing changes from all the best of lists about New Super Mario Bros.
Recently I have just been leveling up in Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes and reading several best games of the year lists to see what I want to play next. I think I also want to spend my Christmas break learning how to make iphone apps. It is the closest I can easily get to making a game for my own hand-held platforms (iPod touch).
I got a shooter for the wii yesterday. Castle of Shikigami III is a bullet hell type shooter, similar to Ikaruga but not nearly as innovative. It is not too challenging but still pretty fun. It has a slight bit of story for each character and there are several to choose from. Each character has a different type of attack so it does make it interesting and fun enough to replay a few times.
Just for insanity sake I got both of my wii controllers and held them together, trying to play two player simultaneous. It was extremely fun but hard. This game was only $10 new at Gamestop.
I actually beat this game on SNES when I was younger. I have recently gotten back into shooters and picked up the Gradius collection on PSP. I still have some of the levels memorized, but my reflexes are not as honed yet.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is a puzzle RPG for DS. You can use either the D-Pad or the stylus to control your board. It plays like most puzzle games, you match like colored troops in different proportions to combine them into one attacking force. When their time runs down, they attack the other side and lower enemy HP. You can equip different types of troops and different artifacts that apply to the entire board to customize your play style and aid in different battles. There is also a magic attack assortment you can equip and fire to clear an enemy row or inflict major damage on the overall enemy HP.
Most battles are visible on the board before you begin. There are places you can grind in random confrontations if you wish also (each type of troop needs to be leveled).
You can save anywhere outside of a battle which makes the game great for quick bursts of puzzley RPG goodness.
